Equipment Checkout
Technology equipment is available to students enrolled in courses. Equipment checkout durations vary based on the item: 120-days, 60-days, and 30-days or 7-days for items with limited inventory.
All loans are limited to 24-hours for staff, faculty, and university affiliates. View our full list of available checkout equipment.
How to Get Equipment
- Availability: Equipment is available on a first-come-first-serve basis. You can contact the Knowledge Commons to verify availability.
- In-Person Checkout: Visit the Knowledge Commons desk on Level 2 during open hours.

Online Checkout Requests:
- Submit an equipment request for home delivery or for in-person pick up at the Level 1 Library Information Desk.
- Requests are monitored Monday - Friday, 8 AM - 6 PM
- You will be notified when the item(s) are ready to ship or be picked up from the hold shelf.
- Equipment will remain on hold shelf for 7 days.
- Large, heavy, or 7-day items are not eligible for home delivery.
Available Equipment
Laptops:
- Mac and Windows laptops are available to students for 60-day check out.
- Specify which type of laptop you need when making a request.
- Only one laptop per patron.
Off-campus internet access:
- Mobile hotspots are available to students for 7 days.

Renewals
- Request renewals in-person at the Knowledge Commons desk, at 801-581-6273, or with an online equipment request.
Renewals are subject to the policies below.

Renewals are subject to availability and whether there is no waitlist for the item.
- If there is a waitlist or you do not get a renewal confirmation, return the item by its due date to avoid accuring late fees.

Laptops cannot be renewed.
- Patrons must return their laptop before they are able to check out another laptop. A different laptop can be checked out immediately upon the return of a laptop.
- Students can back up their files on box.utah.edu which is a free online storage for all University of Utah student, faculty, and staff.
- Priority is given to students. For staff, faculty, and university affiliates, all renewals must be in-person with the item present.

How do I install software on a laptop?
- Open Self Service (Mac) or Software Center (Windows) to install available software. View the full list of available software.
- If you are using Software Center off campus, you may need to connect to the VPN first.
Why am I unable to log in to a laptop?
- First-time logins must be done on campus using your uNID and password.
- After the first login, you can log in off campus using the same credentials.
- Windows users can follow these instructions to log in off-campus.
Why is an item not checking out for the full loan period?
- If you have not enrolled in classes recently, your library account may expire soon.
- Loans cannot extend past your account expiration date.
- Staff and faculty loans are limited to 24 hours.
How do I return equipment by mail?
- You can request a return shipping label online.
