Student Checkout Equipment FAQ
Technology equipment is available to students enrolled in courses. Equipment will check out for 120 days if inventory allows. Items with limited inventory will check out for 7 or 30 days.
All staff and faculty loans are limited to 24 hours and renewals can only be done in-person at the Knowledge Commons desk with the item present.
How to get equipment
You can check out equipment at the Knowledge Commons desk on Level 2 during open hours. You can call ahead at 801-581-6273 to verify availability.
Alternatively, you can submit an online equipment request for home delivery or for in-person pick up at the Level 1 Library Information Desk. You will be notified when the item(s) are ready to ship or be picked up. Items stay on hold shelf for 7 days. Requests are filled for available items each weekday morning. 7-day items and some large or heavy items are not eligible for home delivery.
Laptops: Mac and Windows laptops are available for 120 days. Please specify which one you need when making a request. iPad Pros check out for 7 days due to limited inventory.
Off-campus internet access: Mobile hotspots check out to students for 7 days. Many Xfinity and Utopia Fiber public wifi hotspots are free to access. For qualified customers, Xfinity Internet Essentials is $9.95 per month, with subsidies available in some cases.
Other equipment: View our full list of available checkout equipment.
You can request renewal in person at the Knowledge Commons desk, at 801-581-6273, or with an online equipment request. Renewals are subject to the policies below.
7-day and 30-day items can be renewed only if we do not have a waitlist for them. If there is a waitlist or you do not get a renewal confirmation, return the item by its due date to avoid late fees. If you use the online equipment request, you will be added to the waitlist for the item after you return it.
120-day items can typically be renewed even if there is a waitlist for them, but sometimes we will need to get laptops back for critical updates. In this case, you can exchange the laptop for a new one.
How do I install software on a laptop?
Some software can be installed by opening Self Service (Mac) or Software Center (PC). If you are using Software Center off campus, you may need to connect to the VPN first. For other software, submit a request by clicking the "Problem" dock icon (Mac) or "Problem - Suggest" desktop icon (Windows).
Why am I unable to log in to a laptop?
Typically you need to be on campus the first time you log in, using your uNID and password. After the first login, you can take the laptop off campus and use the same credentials to log in again. If you have a Windows computer, you can follow instructions to log in off campus.
Why is an item not checking out for the full 7, 30, or 120 day period?
If you have not enrolled in classes recently, your library account may be scheduled to expire, in which case your loans won't check out past the expiration date. All staff and faculty loans are limited to 24 hours.
How do I return equipment by mail?
You can request a return shipping label online.
