IMPORTANT COPYRIGHT INFORMATION

WARNING CONCERNING COPYRIGHT RESTRICTIONS

The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted materials. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research". If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use", that user may be liable for copyright infringement.

This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.

Interlibrary Loan provides access to items such as books, newspapers, journal articles, dissertations, etc. from a wide variety of sources that are not available in the Marriott Library. By use of a library system called OCLC, which may be accessed by you via the WorldCat database, we have access to millions of volumes. In most instances books can be provided to you within 1 to 2 weeks and electronic access to articles can be provided within 24-48 hours.

Marriott Library Interlibrary Loan is for the use of students, faculty, staff and emeritus faculty of the University of Utah. Health sciences students, faculty, and staff patrons submit requests through Eccles Health Sciences Library and Law School patrons submit requests through Quinney Law Library.

Not all items are available from Interlibrary Loan. Most libraries will not loan rare or valuable materials, including manuscripts, basic reference materials, or materials in high demand. Dissertations that do not circulate may be purchased from University Microfilms. Some dissertations are available for free downloading through Dissertations & Theses: Full Text. Journals do not circulate, but articles can be requested.

Many items can be provided from alternative sources, such as online full-text databases like JSTOR or EBSCOhost Web Databases. These Research Databases are available on the Marriott Library web page.

Items requested through Interlibrary Loan should be for academic research use only. Please request recreational type material through your local public library.

Textbooks and course required materials are not available through Interlibrary Loan.

Marriott Library materials that are currently checked out by other patrons can be requested through Interlibrary Loan.

Interlibrary Loan requests are submitted online through the Marriott Library's ILLiad system. You can also request items found through WorldCat or articles found in the Marriott Library Research Databases by clicking on the "Request Interlibrary Loan" link listed on these pages. We now offer BorrowItNow, an enhanced Interlibrary Loan service.

For visual step-by-step instructions for these 4 methods for submitting ILL requests, please refer to our How-To Guide page.

borrow it now link An Interlibrary Loan service that allows you to search for and request books directly from libraries of the Greater Western Library Alliance (GWLA), a consortium of 33 research libraries located in the central and western United States. You can expect a faster turnaround time as books are shipped at an expedited rate. You will receive a longer loan period for physical books than the traditional Interlibrary Loan service.

For visual step-by-step instructions, please refer to our How-To Guide page.

It is difficult to estimate when materials will be available once they have been ordered. In most instances books are available within 1 to 2 weeks and electronic access to articles can be provided within 24-48 hours.

Books will be held at the Reserve Desk on the second floor and notification of their availability will be sent to you via email. The Reserve Desk closes 15 minutes prior to the library's closing time. The lending library may require the material to remain in the Marriott Library.

Borrowed items need to be returned directly to the Reserve Desk or Library Information & Security Desks at the entrances. Patrons will be held responsible for overdue fines and/or replacement costs of missing books as a result of removing ILL labels or returning to any other location. If your ILL items were delivered to your campus office, please email mlib-delivery@lists.utah.edu to arrange a pickup.

Articles will be posted on your ILLiad account online. You will receive an email notifying you of their availability.

The Interlibrary Loans office is located on the fifth floor of the Marriott Library. Patron access to the ILL office is unavailable. You can contact us via telephone us at 801-581-6010 or e-mail us with any additional questions.

The Interlibrary Loan contact hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M.

Interlibrary Loan materials are meant for short term use only. Due dates for Interlibrary Loan materials are assigned by the lending library. Lending libraries have the right to recall Interlibrary Loan materials and you might be asked to return items before the due date.

Interlibrary Loan materials should be used within the time frame allowed and not requested more than once. If needed we will request one two-week renewal from the lending library. If you feel that the Marriott Library should own the material you are requesting, please suggest a purchase.

The due date for items is printed on the ILL book strap. Items need to be returned to the Reserve Desk or Library Information & Security Desks by this date. You will be charged a $10.00 fine for items 7 days overdue. If the book is not returned before the 15th day past the due date, you will be billed for replacement of the item (at least $50.00) plus a $25.00 processing fee. The $10.00 overdue fine and the $25.00 processing fee will not be forgiven.

Reminder and overdue notices are sent as courtesy. You are responsible for returning your ILL books on time.

There is no charge to request books or articles through Interlibrary Loan.
