Roger A. Cushing

Roger Alan Cushing was born in 1943. Cushing is an area artist and art educator of note who has taught at Viewmont High School. As a painter, he does religious themes as well as expressive regional realist farm subjects with a landscape emphasis, all in oils.

Roger is a native of Bountiful and is a graduate of Bountiful High. He received his Bachelors Degree from Weber State College in 1969 and did post graduate work at Utah State University and Northern Arizona University. In 1977, he completed a Masters Degree from Brigham Young University.

Roger has exhibited at the Springville Museum, Myra Powell Gallery, Ogden Union Station, Tivoli Gallery, Bountiful Davis Art Center, Farmington Library, South Davis Bank, Barnes Bank, Brushworks Gallery, Phillips Gallery, The Deseret News Annual Show, Utah State University, Weber State University, Brigham Young University, Utah State Fair, St. Joseph Michigan, Utah Historical Society, Apple Frame Gallery, Layton Historical Museum, Repartee' Gallery, Canyon Gallery, and Davis County Court House.

Roger Alan Cushing (1943-), of Bountiful, Utah, is an area artist and art educator of note who has taught at Viewmont High School. As a painter, he does religious themes as well as expressive regional realist farm subjects with a landscape emphasis, all in oils.

Roger is a native of Bountiful and is a graduate of Bountiful High. He received his Bachelors Degree from Weber State College in 1969 and did post graduate work at Utah State University and Northern Arizona University. In 1977, he completed a Masters Degree from Brigham Young University.

He has taught art in Davis County for thirty-four years. He is currently teaching at Viewmont High School in Bountiful. In 1990 he taught seminary full time for the L.D.S. Church but returned to teaching art a year later. There was a conflict with the retirement systems. He has also taught art at the University of Utah, Brigham Young University, Bountiful Davis Art Center, and has been an ad hoc professor at Weber State University.

He has free-lanced as an illustrator, designer, and fine artist. Pencil, watercolor and oils are his preferred mediums. Roger has exhibited at the Springville Museum, Myra Powell Gallery, Ogden Union Station, Tivoli Gallery, Bountiful Davis Art Center, Farmington Library, South Davis Bank, Barnes Bank, Brushworks Gallery, Phillips Gallery, The Deseret News Annual Show, Utah State University, Weber State University, Brigham Young University, Utah State Fair, St. Joseph Michigan, Utah Historical Society, Apple Frame Gallery, Layton Historical Museum, Repartee' Gallery, Canyon Gallery, and Davis County Court House.

He was a State Sterling Scholar in the visual arts category as he graduated from high school. He was the first runner up in that competition. His senior year at Weber State, he won the “Best of Show Award“ and the purchase award. He has won awards at the State Fair in acrylic, oil painting, and water color painting. In 1982, one of his oil paintings won the purchase award in the The Deseret News Annual Art Exhibition. He received the second place award at the Bountiful Davis Art Center's Annual Show. In 1994, he won the juror's award at the Annual Spring Show. In 1996, he was named “Teacher of the Year“ by Springville Museum and Brigham Young University.

He has works in the permanent collection at Brigham Young University, Weber State, Bountiful High, Viewmont High, Clearfield High, North Davis Junior High, North Layton Junior High, South Davis Junior High, Davis High, Farmington Junior High, and the Davis County District Office.

Landscape, figure painting, portrait, and animals are his favorite subjects. He has had his work featured in the Springville Annual Salon publication, Utah Artists Today, Ensign Magazine for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints,The Deseret News, The Salt Lake Tribune, Ogden Standard Examiner, and The Davis County Clipper.
