CONTENT AND SCOPE The Andrew Wood Cooley Family papers are an excellent source of genealogical work and biographical information on the entire Cooley family. In addition to the Cooley Family Association of America materials, the collection is well stocked with photocopies of biographies, obituaries, personal reminiscences, and diary entries. The initial section--box one--is the Cooley family material arranged alphabetically. This section contains general material about the family and its association, as well as temple records of baptisms and other information about the entire Cooley family. Section two--boxes two, three, and three "a"--is a compilation of information about specific Cooley family members. The largest amount of material pertains to Andrew Wood Cooley. Material is arranged alphabetically with married surnames or extra names included in parentheses and disregarded in the alphabetics. Most of the information is photocopied and overlaps within close family circles. Information may be located under a parent or child heading. Section three--boxes four, five and five "a"--contains the Cooley family correspondence. The section is arranged alphabetically by author (in most cases) and chronologically within each folder. Box four is a complete copy of the originals located in box five. Patrons are requested to use box four in place of box five when perusal of the original is not required. In most cases, the copies provide a cleaner, more discernible impression than the originals. In addition, some typewritten transcripts of the correspondence have been included in the copies of box four. Box five "a" is a recently added box of mission correspondence for Henry W. Cooley. The letters span the years 1906 to 1908. All letters are originals; no copies exist for this box of correspondence. Section four--box six--contains Eldredge family materials. The material is arranged alphabetically. This section is a primary source for Eldredge family material. Included is an original diary of James A. Eldredge, the genealogical record of James A. Eldredge, a Book of Remembrance tracking the genealogy of the Eldredge-Cooley family, and a funeral record of Lucretia May Eldredge Cooley. Other pertinent Eldredge materials are also included. Section five--box seven--contains material relating to the Huntington family. Also included are several short bound histories of John Lathrop and Henry Baily Jacobs (husband of Zina Diantha Huntington). This is also a source of genealogical information about the Huntington family BIOGRAPHY Andrew Wood Cooley, the first bishop of the Brighton Ward--Salt Lake Stake--was born May 24, 1837, at Bruce, McComb County, Michigan, the son of Benjamin Cooley and Clarissa Wood. On June 1, 1858, he married Diana Briggs at St. Claire County, Michigan. She did not follow Cooley to Utah, and they conceived no children. Cooley migrated to Utah in 1863, where he became a convert to Mormonism and was baptized in 1864--the only member of his father's family to join the LDS church and to raise a family. In Utah, he engaged in farming and stock raising. On February 17, 1866, he married Mary Asenath Huntington, who was born May 31, 1846, in Cambria, Niagara County, New York. Together they bore seven children--Clarissa M., Andrew B., Melissa B., George W., Chester N., Harold Ghesa, and May Asenath. Cooley was selected as bishop of the first Brighton Ward when the members residing on the west side of the Jordan river (immediately west of Salt Lake City) were organized into the Brighton Ward of the Salt Lake Stake. The appointment was made on February 24, 1867, and Cooley held the position until 1877. On February 22, 1868, Cooley was married to Jane Jenkins--born June 25, 1844. Together they bore eight children--William J., John B., Henry W., Alva L., Melissa J., Fanny Elizabeth, Samuel B., and Ethel C. Cooley also married Rachel Caroline Coon on this same date. Rachel Coon--the daughter of Abraham Coon of Ohio and Elizabeth Yarbrough of Tennessee--was born March 22, 1848, at Council Bluffs, Iowa. She had come to Utah with her parents in 1850. Together they bore nine children--Samuel B., Idabel, Maretta E., Isabel, Lucretia May, Oscar W., Andrew W., Abraham C., and Francis Ann. On February 14, 1870, Cooley married Ann Hazen--daughter of Robert Hazen and Mary Ann Bainbridge of Newcastle, England--who was born September 25, 1854, in England. Together they bore eight children--Marcus R., John S., Ezra H., Mary A., Martha J., Inez, Arthur D., and Walter A. Cooley died October 11, 1887, at his home in Brighton. For "illegal cohabitation," Cooley served two terms in the Utah penitentiary. A severe illness he contracted while in prison led to his death in 1887. Cooley has had a number of descendents--at least 120 by 1919--many of whom fill prominent positions within the LDS church. (This biography is extracted from a photocopy of the Latter-Day Saint Biographical Encyclopedia located in box two, folder 2.) INVENTORY I. COOLEY FAMILY BIOGRAPHICAL/GENEALOGICAL MATERIAL Biographical sketches, obituaries, funeral programs and other material related to the Cooley family. CORRESPONDENCE Boxes four and five contain correspondence written by or to Cooley family members. The boxes contain copies of identical correspondence. Patrons are requested to use the copies in all cases, except where persual of the original is required. In most cases, the copies are actually easier to read than the originals which are fragile and very faint. In cases where copies exist and originals do not, a copy has been placed in the "originals" box. Typewritten transcripts of most of the correspondence are placed with the copies in box four. Letters are alphabetized by author. In the cases of Jane Jenkins Cooley and Melissa Cooley, each has a folder of correspondence written to them by various individuals or unidentified authors.
