About the Photograph and Audio-Visual Archives

Marriott Library,
University of Utah

Welcome to the Marriott Library!

The Audio-Visual Section contains the non-textual archives of the Manuscripts Division of the Marriott Library. This includes virtually all graphic formats such as photographs, films, video and audio tapes, from daguerreotypes to digital scans, and from wire recordings to one-inch studio-quality videotapes.

The section houses over 650 separate photograph collections. Collections range in size from a single image to thousands of images of varying sizes and formats. For each collection there is an inventory, or register. In the entire Photograph Archives there are approximately 800,000 photographs, representing almost all historic formats such as daguerreotypes, tintypes, cartes-de-viste, ambrotypes, albumen prints, panoramas, and cyanotypes, as well as more modern color and black and white prints, slides, and negatives.

Audio-visual collections not part of the University Archives number over 300, and include audio cassettes and reels; vinyl recording discs; video tapes of many different formats; and films in 8mm, Super-8, 16mm, and 35mm. For a non-searchable guide to the Audio-Visual holdings, see the Audio-Visual Guide.

The photographic and audio-visual archives of the University of Utah--resources documenting the University faculty, administration, buildings, campus life, and departments--are considered a separate collection. For a non-searchable index to these materials, please see University of Utah Archives Photographs.

Copying of both photographs and audio-visual items is allowed, but due to the priceless nature of the collections, as well as copyright considerations, restrictions apply to use and copying of photographs and audio-visual collections, and special fees apply for use in publications. Please see Copyright and Use Restrictions for details, or contact the Audio-Visual Archivist.

All of the photos in the Online Photograph Collection are taken from the Marriott Library's Photograph Archives. While every effort has been made to faithfully reproduce the originals in digital form, the process of digitizing photographs inherently introduces subtle changes. Brightness, contrast, and color representation may each be affected by scanning hardware and software. The process of resizing digital images for presentation on computer monitors may further affect the sharpness and detail of the photos.

To adapt photographs for presentation in this digital medium we have routinely adjusted size, brightness, and sharpness to preserve and display as much original information as possible. Some photos have been cropped to reduce extraneous detail, to center the primary subject of the photo and to reduce file size, thereby speeding web access. All photos presented here are copies of the original scans which remain unaltered.

The goals of the Online Photograph Archives are:
