Lot Smith Papers (Ms 4)

University of Utah Marriott Library, Manuscripts Division

The Lot Smith Papers (1857-1889) holds correspondence and other documents concerned with the activities of Smith, a military leader in the "Utah War" of 1857 and in the Nauvoo Legion of the Utah Territorial Militia during the Civil War. In addition, the collection holds documents regarding the establishment of Mormon settlements on the Little Colorado River in northern Arizona, including letters from Brigham Young, John Taylor and Wilford Woodruff that counsel Smith in establishing and administering these settlements. Smith (1830-1892) was a convert to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who immigrated to Utah. In addition to his responsibilities in northern Arizona, he was a president of the church's 74th Quorum of Seventy and, in 1869 to 1871, completed a mission to Great Britain. A register is available.
