People" (Ms 346)
"Traditions of Pregnancy Which Influence Child Care of the Navajo People"
(1975) is a progress report from the Shiprock Service Unit, the University
of Utah College of Nursing, Maternal and Child Health Project, Shiprock,
New Mexico, written by Lorraine B. Sevcovic and Rosemary Knoki. Its
discusses the delivery of health care to Navajo women during pregnancy,
particularly the integration of cultural traditions and beliefs into
nursing care and the involvement of the community in prioritizing health
care needs to achieve compatibility with tradition and culture. The paper
contains many accounts of pregnancies and the differing attitudes toward
prenatal, parturition and postpartum care. A register is available.
