Art Barn Records (Ms 273)

University of Utah Marriott Library, Manuscripts Division

The Art Barn Records (1930-1982) consists of three scrapbooks of news clippings from 1930 through 1937 that trace the conception and beginnings of the Art Barn, a permanent art center that was the first of its kind in the state of Utah. A magazine article and additional news clippings from 1938 to 1982 note art exhibits, and cultural and fund raising events at the Art Barn. A brief history of the Art Barn's earliest years from 1930 to 1933 is included, as are additional documents. The Art Barn was established in order to provide Salt Lake City with a center for the arts. The person most responsible for conceiving of and nurturing the Art Barn was Alta Rawlins Jensen, and formal opening ceremonies were held in June 1933. An indexed register is available.
