Associated Utah Artists Records (Ms 262)
The Associated Utah Artists Records (1929-1955) is composed of seven scrapbooks
containing news clippings about many of the original members of the Associated Utah
Artists, as well as articles about events and exhibits at Salt Lake City's Art Barn
and throughout the state. The collection also contains event programs and
correspondence consisting of letters about art and art exhibits written to Rose and
Cornelius Salisbury. A minute book tells briefly of the organizational meeting in
June 1940, as well as successive meetings. A membership list of Utah artists of the
period and listings of some of their paintings used in exhibits makes up the greater
portion of the only holograph record in the collection. The Associated Utah Artists
held their organizational meeting in the home of Cornelius and Rose Howard Salisbury.
Florence Ware was the first chairman, and LeConte Stewart and Mary Kimball were among
those serving on the Board of Directors. The organization's objectives included
promotion of a "progressive spirit in painting and sculpture by a healthy concern with
new media and technique, by a spirit of mutual helpfulness, and an essentially native
growth." Charter members included James T. Harwood, LeConte Stewart, Olof Moller,
Verla Birrell, Bert Franklin Larsen, Avard Fairbanks, Gordon Cope, Jack Sears, and
others. An indexed register is available.
