George Washington Hill Biography (Ms 168)

University of Utah Marriott Library, Manuscripts Division

The George Washington Hill Biography (ca. 1972) was written by Bess Foster Smith. A note on sources at the end of the document indicates it was based on a manuscript by Theresa Snow Hill, a descendent of George Washington Hill (1822-1901), and on interviews with Hill's grand niece and nephew. George Washington Hill and his family migrated to Utah in 1847, where became a missionary to the Shoshones, Bannocks, and Nez Perce. When Indian disturbances in 1857 forced the Mormons to abandon the mission at Lemhi, Hill moved to Ogden, Utah. He served as an interpreter for the Federal Indian Agent until 1873, when Brigham Young appointed him to head the northern Indian missions. Later he became interpreter of Indian languages for the Mormon Church. A register is available.
