George Dollinger Pyper Papers (Ms 1)

University of Utah Marriott Library, Manuscripts Division

The George Dollinger Pyper Papers (1897-1929) reflects Pyper's lifelong devotion to music and the performing arts. The collection contains correspondence, record books, account books, programs, plays, tickets, and other memorabilia. Pyper was the leading tenor in the Salt Lake Opera Company from 1885 until 1910. He had a great love for the theater, and was manager of the Salt Lake Theatre from 1898 until its razing in 1929. Pyper was a member of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and toured with them in 1893. The collection contains documentation of the choir's trips to Chicago and San Francisco as well as the choir's 1911 tour to New York City, which Pyper managed. In addition to his other responsibilities, he was president of the Salt Lake Oratorio Society, a charter member of the Orpheus Club, a member of the Philharmonic Society, manager and president of the Musical Arts Society, president of the Salt Lake Civic Music Association, and organizer of The Message of the Ages when he was chairman of the Centennial Pageant Committee. Pyper authored a few books, two of which are included in the collection: The Romance of an Old Theatre (1928), an informal history of the Salt Lake Theatre, and Stories of Latter-day Saint Hymns, Their Authors and Composers (1939). An indexed register is available.
