P0370 Wasatch Mountains/National Forest Service 147 Images (1880s-1970s)
This collection portrays various activities in the Wasatch Mountains, from the back country tours of the 1960s to snow machines used through the years to groom the slopes. Frank Koziol and G.F. Horton are the prominent photographers. As it stands the collection is comprised of photographs donated by the National Forest Service, but it will expand as contributions are received from other sources. View Images.

This collection details the historic and scenic beauty of Alta from the early days of both mining and skiing. Included are images of skiers, lifts, lodges, shelters, ski runs, avalanches, and the general area. Also found in the collection are portraits and action shots of noted skiers such as Alf Engen and Stein Erickson. View Images.

P0372 University of Utah Ski Team 38 Images (1945-1946, 1970-1990s)
This collection contains one image of the first ski team sponsored by the University of Utah and coached by Ike Armstrong. In the collection there are also four photos of skiers at Brighton Ski Resort during December of 1955, and one photo of Edith Horrall standing in front of a home holding skis. Pat Miller donated two addenda to the University of Utah Ski Team collection which consist of images of the ski team during the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. View Images.


P0373 Olympic Ski Team 12 Images (1947)
This collection contains twelve photographs, seven of which are of the 1947 Olympic Ski Team, featuring Jack Reddish, Dev Jennings, and Dick Movitz. Many of the images were obtained from the Salt Lake Tribune and are accompanied by detailed information on the subjects and individuals in each picture. View Images.


P0374 Snow Basin 170 Images (1930s-1950s)
This collection, donated primarily by the National Forest Service, documents the beginnings of this northern Utah ski area. Dates on the photographs begin in the early 1940s, with details of ski technique and early equipment. Snow Basin Ski Area was begun in the late 1930s by Ogden City Recreation. It was operated by the city until the 1950s when it was sold to private interests. View Images.

P0375 Earl Miller 56 Images (1940s-1980s)
In the early 1940s, Earl Miller began his association with Snow Basin as a ski instructor. In the mid-1950s, with the departure of Corey Engen, Miller became the ski school director. Earl, and his wife Gladdis, operated the ski school until their retirement in 1987. Earl Miller was also extensively involved in competitive skiing in the Ogden area (i.e. coaching, course-setting, etc.). He was an examiner and officer for the Professional Ski Instructors of America - Intermountain. (PSIA- I). In ski teaching circles, he was known as a great technician.View Images.

The 45 photographs coordinate with the Snow Basin Collection, P0374, which were donated by the United States Forest Service, and with the collection of Ralph Johnston, P0392.


P0376 Raymond Stewart 20 Images (1940s-1950s)
This collection reveals the early days of skiing on Mount Timpanogos. Dating in the 1940s-1950s, the photographs show summer skiing, tower construction, early ski instruction, and the chairlifts of then Timp Haven. Ray Stewart developed skiing in the Timpanogos area on land that was homesteaded by his family. Stewart purchased his first tow used from the Rasmussen's Ranch in Parley's Canyon. He and his brother operated the area in the late 1930s and early 1940s. Ray Stewart bought his brother out in the late 1940s. He and his wife, Ava, then operated the area until it was sold and changed to Sundance in the early 1970s.View Images.


P0377 Ruth Peay 46 Images (1940s-1950s)
This collection contains many original photographs by Salt Lake City's preeminent outdoor/action photographer, L. Clyde Anderson. Anderson photographed many different aspects of the ski areas, predominately Alta, and ski life with large format and movie cameras.View Images.


P0378 Salt Lake Tribune 41 Images (1879-1939)
Many classic photographs of ski jumping meets at Ecker Hill in the mid-1940s. The collection also contains a number of lithographs and photographs of the early mining days at Alta.View Images.


P0379 Brighton 356 Images (1890s-1990s)
This collection reflects Brighton as it was in the mid-1900s. Photographs were donated by the National Forest Service. K. Smith operated the first ski tow in Brighton beginning in 1939. Smith sold the tow to Zane Doyle in 1943 while he was serving in the armed forces. Zane Doyle's family owned and operated Brighton until it was sold to Boyne Corporation in 1987.

The addendum consists entirely of scans and Kodak thermal prints. Folders three and four contain inverted scans of negatives and photographs ranging in subject matter from images of historic Brighton to skiing in the 1990s. Folder five contains scans of past Brighton lift tickets, and folder six contains scans of pamphlets produced by Brighton from 1975-1992. A time-line history provided by Brighton Ski Resort is included in the addendum.View Images.


P0380 Rasmussen's Ranch 12 Images (1943)
A collection of photographs that document the small resort at Parley's Summit in the 1940s. The lift at the time was a rope tow. View Images.


P0381 Seeholzer/Beaver Mountain 40 Images (1940s-1950s)
A collection of nearly 40 photographs from the northern Utah ski area. Many were donated by the National Forest Service. Beaver Mountain was initiated by the Mt. Logan Ski Club and Logan City recreation in 1939 at the current Beaver Mountain Location. At the time there was no road into the area and skiers had to walk from highway 89. As a result the decision was made to move the tow from Beaver Mountain to the Sinks. The tow was operated at the Sinks until 1945 at which time the city of Logan wanted out of the ski business and offered it for sale. The Seeholzers were interested. In 1946 the tow was moved back to Beaver Mountain and a road was put in to provide access for the skiers. The Seeholzer Family continues to operate the area today.View Images.

One view from the top ridgeline of Sundance. Sundance was originally Timp Haven Ski Area. It was purchased by Robert Redford and changed to Sundance in the early 1970s. For Timp Haven photographs see P0376, the Raymond Stewart collection.View Images.


P0384 Park City Ski Area 28 Images (1975)
A small collection of photographs of the area during the 1970s, donated by Instructional Media Services consisting mostly of 2"X 2" contact prints. Park City began operation in the 1963-1964 season. Park City was originally owned and operated by the Silver King Mining Co. and was established with the assistance of an economic development grant from the state government of Utah. Park City was sold to the Royal Street Company in 1970, and again in 1975 to Alpine Meadows of California.View Images.

Color and black and white prints of the early years of operation in the 1970s, many of which are 2"X 2" contact prints. Snowbird began operation in 1971. The area was developed through the efforts of Ted Johnson and Dick Bass.View Images.

P0389 Junior Bounous 9 Images (1965)
A collection of copy prints from Junior Bounous's private collection. He was a ski instructor at Alta in his younger days. Bounous left Alta in the early sixties to take a job at Sugarbowl in California as Ski School Director. He returned to Utah as the director of the ski school at Snowbird in 1971.View Images.

P0392 Ralph Johnston 45 Images(1932-1938)
A collection of photographs duplicated from Ralph Johnston's personal collection which consists of Wasatch Mountain Club events, especially the Park City to Brighton traverse. All images are 5 x 7 copy prints with negatives available. They are assembled in the order received. Johnston was involved in the Wasatch Mountain Club in his younger days. He has been an avid amateur photographer for many years and has documented many of his skiing experiences. He served on the ski patrol at Snow Basin until the resort changed hands in 1987. Since that time he serves on the ski patrol at Nordic Valley.View Images.

The informal pictures and Alta views have been glued to cardboard. Items 3-8 are attached to a single piece of cardboard, and items 9-16 are attached to a second piece. This collection contains copy prints of photos of the Deseret Ski School, 1948-90, primarily featuring Alf Engen. Original photographs were returned to the owner. Eleven photos are of Mike Korologos and the construction of Snowbird Resort. The last four photographs (and 69 negatives) were taken at the dedication of the Women's Olympic Downhill course at Snow Basin on March 19, 1999. View Images.

P0412 Suzy Harris Rytting 275 Images (1940s-1990s)
This collection consists of one 4 x 6 black and white photograph of Suzy Harris Rytting racing at Sun Valley, and 245 digital scans of material retained by the Ryttings. Suzy Harris Rytting was a member of the 1952 U.S. Olympic team and held many ski racing titles during the late 1940s and early 1950s. This collection reflects Suzy Rytting's career as a skier and model and contains portraits of Suzy Rytting's friends and colleagues. The collection also addresses some of Rytting's involvement in Utah's bid for the Olympic Games during the 1990s. View Images.

The Alan K. Engen collection documents the history skiing in Utah and the evolution of the sport. Images included relate to the origin of skiing in the Intermountain West, the organization of ski schools and clubs, notable Utah skiers, and the development of ski jumping in Utah. In addition to highlighting the Engen brothers, this collection focuses on the development of ski resorts throughout Northern Utah, including Alta, Brighton, Snow Basin, and Solitude. View Images.


P0414 Intermountain Ski Instructors Association 23 Images (1970-1971)
Eighteen of the prints are of the 1970 I.S.I.A demonstration team with a photocopy of an I.S.I.A. article featuring Corky Fowler as part of the team. Also included is a print of Isolde Collins, Executive Secretary, and photocopies of two letters, one a recommendation from a former employer and the other a cover letter for her resume. Three other prints show a ski instructor's trade fair. View Images.

This collection consists of 66 black and white photographs of various sizes, mostly 8 x10 and seven black and white postcards. Most images are single and group portraits that include Karen Korfanta, alpine racer, member of the 1966 University of Utah Ski Team and the 1969-70 U.S. Ski Team. Some earlier photographs include Sonny Korfanta. Other materials in the Karen Korfanta Collection include scrapbooks, correspondence, and two 16mm films. View Images.

P0421 Robert L. Springmeyer 5 Ski Images (1960s)
The Robert L. Springmeyer collection contains images of ski racing and timing, military subject matter, architectural drawings and completed buildings, and snapshots of the Springmeyer family at home and on vacation. One of Springmeyer's passions was skiing. In 1964 he joined the United States Ski Association Intermountain Division as director. He was also elected to the position of Vice-president for the United States Ski Association. He encouraged and fostered local youth ski racing in Utah. One way he accomplished this was through his involvement with the Salt Lake Ski Club, helping set up and being a timer for ski competitions. View Images.

The John Hoagland Collection deals primarily with ski subject matter at Alta and Brighton, Utah, and Crystal Springs and Snow King in the Teton National Forest. The main focus of this collection is on avalanches, including studies, reports, avalanche prevention, and avalanche safety. The collection also addresses ski lift safety and includes a few photos of ski patrollers in action. View Images.

The seven photographs that make the Bill Spencer collection are of biathlon skiers. Three of the images are of Bill Spencer on skis, ca. 1960s-1980s. The remaining four images were created from digital scans of 35 mm slides of a U.S. ski team, 1964 Olympic Biathlon Team, and two men working with a gun. The collection also contains images of the Eccles family, and newspaper articles featuring Spencer Eccles during the 1950s. Ralph Wakely skied for the University of Utah and competed in the 1968 Olympics. This collection contains two images of Wakely, one of him looking up at the camera, and the other of Wakely competing in the Biathlon pre-Olympic trials in Autrans, France. View Images.

This small collection contains eight digital scans of images of cross-country ski racing, ski jumping, and disabled athletes competing in National and World Cup competitions. The images were ordered and downloaded from the United States Ski Team internal internet site by Pat Miller. View Images.


P0907 Scott Hoffman 7 Images (1970s-1980s)
This collection contains images of Scott Hoffman ski racing and holding a trophy when he was young. Two images, taken from newspaper clippings, of Hoffman racing for the University of Utah also belong to the collection. In 1976 Hoffman won the Snow Cup Race, no other biographical information is known. All images in this collection are digital scans. Scott Hoffman and Pat Miller retain the originals. View Images.

This collection contains two digital scans of images of Katie Shakelford ski racing in the U.S. National Championships and at Park City in 1997 and 1998. This collections contains one color image of Yamada competing inthe U.S. Ski Team Giant Slalom Super Series in Park City, Utah, February 2000. Yamada is a member of the U.S. Ski Team and won the 1997 Snow Cup race. View Images.

P0916 David Engen 1 Image
The David Engen collection contains one black and white photograph of Engen competing in the slalom event at the World University Games in 1966. David Engen skied for the University of Utah from 1963 through 1966. He competed in downhill, slalom, cross-country, and jumping, and was ski team captain in 1966. He was chosen as a member of the United States Alpine Ski Team in 1966. View Images.


P0919 Axel J. Andresen 21 Images
Axel J. Andresen was one of the pioneer ski jumpers in Utah during the 1920s, pre-dating Alf Engen by nearly a decade. The Andresen collection contains images relating to Andresen's ski jumping and the 1952 Winter Olympic Games held in Oslo, Norway, including original tickets to various events. The majority of the images are not identified. View Images.


P0920 Stu and Greta O'Brien 48 Images
Stu and Greta O'Brien were professional skiers during the 1980s and early 1990s. They constantly appeared in ski magazines such as Powder. This collection consists of digital scans of photographs taken from the O'Brien's portfolios. View Images.


P0921 Karen Huntoon Miller 289 Images (1970s-1980s)
Karen Huntoon Miller was a freestyle skier sponsored by Colgate during the 1970s and early 1980s. This collection contains images of Miller and her associates skiing in a variety of competitions, receiving awards, and working at summer training camps. Few of the images are identified. P0922 Ernest and Dora Jeppsen 8 Images (1930s)
Ernest and Dora Jeppsen lived in Colorado in the late 1930s, moving back to Utah in 1939. The photographs are assumed to date from that period, but no further information is available. The large format (11" x 14") photographs are professionally composed and mounted, and depict winter scenes and people on snowshoes. Three names are on various of the images: Paul Jesswein, Bert Allen, and D.E. Farmer. No information on these individuals is available. View Images.

P0951 Andy Wright 405 Images (1996-2000)
Andy Wright is a professional photographer located in Salt Lake City specializing in snowboard photography. The Wright collection contains digital scans taken from 35mm slides of snowboarders at Brighton, Alta, Snowbird and other Utah ski resorts, as well as boarders in Salt Lake City and the Wasatch backcountry. The collection also contains images of boarders competing in the X-Games and at a snowboarding camp at Mt. Hood, Washington. The collection features a long list of snowboarders including Tonino Copene, Josh Roberts, Austin Orth, Kasey Marks, Brad Scheuffele, and many others. The original order of the images has been retained. All of the images in this collection are protected by copyright and may not be used without the exclusive permission of the photographer. P0952 Rich Varga 112 Images (1980s-1990s)
Rich Varga was a professional snowboarder during the 1980s. Due to an injury in 1991, Varga retired and never returned to professional competition. This collection documents Varga's development as a snowboarder as well as the development of the sport of snowboarding. Images of white water kayaking, a summer hobby of Varga's, are also included in the collection. View Images.

Jeff Davis was a professional snowboarder during the late 1980s and early 1990s. This collection contains images of Jeff Davis snowboarding in competition and for pleasure at Snowbird, Brighton and other Utah ski resorts. Many of the photographs were taken by John L. Kelly of INI Enterprises and are protected by copyright. The Davis collection contains digital scans of 35mm slides and photographs only, the originals were retained by Jeff Davis. View Images.

Nate Christenson is a professional snowboard photographer located in Salt Lake. The Christenson collection contains beautiful images of Utah ski resorts, as well as some photos from resorts in Colorado and California.
