Various ski collections are housed in the Manuscripts and Multimedia Divisions of Special Collections at the University of Utah J. Willard Marriott Library. As the primary part of the larger Utah Ski Archives project, the ski collections have been gathered in order to preserve a comprehensive history of skiing in Utah and the Intermountain region. This offers a unique opportunity for historical and contemporary research into Utah's prospering ski industry and the lives of the people who have influenced its success. The collections document the evolution of the sport and the industry, including the history of ski competition on local, national, and international levels. The S. J. & J. E. Quinney Foundation recognized the importance of the undertaking and provided critical seed money to begin the Utah Ski Archives project and the ski collections. Future additions of material to the ski collections, and continued development of the Utah Ski Archives project will strengthen the value of these resources and provide an important repository of materials for research now and in the future.

This guide contains brief descriptions of the currently available textual, oral history, photo, visual and sound recording holdings, complete with a name and subject index. Many of the holdings listed also have had individual finding aids prepared for them, and these can be referred to when additional information is needed.

Materials in the various holdings include correspondence, news clippings, competition rosters, organizational documents such as meeting minutes, architectural drawings and site plans, and miscellaneous items ranging from jacket pins to scrapbooks. Sound and visual recordings, graphic presentations, photographs and oral histories are frequently found in the holdings. The oral histories are an especially useful and fascinating section of the holdings, and provide personal insight and information directly from the source. The photograph collections offer the researcher an exceptional opportunity to view many different ski-related people and places.

While the guide describes the available ski-related holdings in the Manuscripts Division and in the Multimedia Archives, additional important ski information may also be found in the Western Americana collection, which includes monographs, University of Utah dissertations, clippings and vertical files. Explore other ski-related areas within the library’s catalog, or seek assistance from a reference librarian who can help find appropriate information.
