Collection Guide

The Manuscripts Division's collections are organized into two numbering systems. Most of these collections are open for use to anyone following a simple registration procedure. Some collections are unprocessed and use is restricted. Many collections are housed in off-site storage and require advance notice for use. Collection sizes range from one folder to several hundred boxes.

Photocopying is allowed on most collection materials within copyright and "fair use" restrictions.

"Ms" call numbers indicate fully-processed collections with detailed finding aids that include "content and scope" statements, historical and/or biographical descriptions, and (usually) indexes. "Accn" call numbers indicate collections for which minimal or no processing has occurred. Existing finding aids consist of box and folder inventories with brief introductory descriptions.
