THE INSTITUTE OF THE NORTH AMERICAN WEST RECORDS (Accn 1293)
INVENTORY
J. Willard Marriott Library, Manuscripts Division
University of Utah
You are the person to visit this page since April 20,
1998.
This inventory was prepared by Ann Reichman in October 1997.
The Institute of the North American West Records (INAW, 1870, 1886, 1903-1937, and 1972- 1993) consists of manuscripts,
research materials and notes, maps, interviews, court exhibits, correspondence, and publications. This non-profit educational
institution was established in 1984 by E. Richard Hart, Matthew J. Cullen, and Barry Sadler for the purpose of providing
historical background, documentation, and opportunities for discussion of current thinking in regards to environmental and
cultural concerns, economic development, and problems connected with these issues in the North American West, Canada to
Mexico. The organizers were also involved with the Institute of the American West in Sun Valley, Idaho, and some materials
from that organization are found in INAW files, particularly in boxes 50-65.
The first 49 boxes, received as a group, are divided in three groups. Documents regarding the INAW's formative period and
the organization's initial projects are in boxes 1-10. Included are memos and correspondence regarding the formation of the
INAW Board of Directors, as well as documents regarding the initial projects undertaken by INAW. Box 3, folders 2 and 15,
holds a statement of the organization's purpose and goals. Documents regarding the general business affairs of the INAW are
in boxes 11-21. Included are financial records and documents regarding Westrends. The last of the three groups, housed in
boxes 22-49, hold documents regarding the Zuni court cases. ACCESS TO THESE DOCUMENTS (BOXES 22-49) REQUIRES APPROVAL FROM
THE ASSISTANT DIRECTOR FOR SPECIAL COLLECTIONS, AS WELL AS FROM THE PUEBLO OF ZUNI, IF DEEMED NECESSARY.
Materials resulting from projects regarding folklore, Idaho's Duck Valley, and other topics are located in boxes 50-65.
Portions of this material are related to projects administered under the auspices of the Institute of the American West.
PHOTOCOPYING OF MATERIALS IN BOX 63, FOLDERS 1-3, IS NOT PERMITTED. Boxes 66-70 contain materials for two projects:
the second edition of the Zuni History Tabloid, and the Puget Sound Celebration. Boxes 71-80 hold, primarily, printed
materials pertaining to sustainable development. Present are reports, journals, and newsletters, as well as some
correspondence and notes. Additional materials regarding the work in conservation and sustainable development, particularly
the Fence Lake project and efforts to formulate a Zuni resource development plan, are housed in boxes 81- 90. Manuscript
drafts and research materials relating to these projects are included. Boxes 91-94 hold additional materials relating to INAW
activities in a variety of areas. Present are maps, research data, and notes regarding Zuni history.
Photographs and audio-visual materials have been transferred to the Manuscripts Division's Multimedia Section
(P0747
P0439, and A0377). Additional collections of interest include the Institute of the
American West Records (Ms 582), the Zuni Land Claims Cases Records
(Accn 1200) and the E. Richard Hart Papers (Accn
1251).
This
collection was donated by E. Richard Hart in December 1991 (boxes 1-65), May 1992 (boxes 66-70), December 1993 (boxes 71-80),
and 1994 (boxes 81-94). Issues of High Country News accompanying the December 1993 donation were transferred to the
Marriott Library's Western Americana collection. Size: 48 lin. ft.
