Institute of the North American West Records (Accn 1293)

University of Utah Marriott Library, Manuscripts Division

The Institute of the North American West Records (INAW; 1870, 1886, 1903-1937, and 1972-1993) consists of manuscripts, research materials and notes, maps, interviews, court exhibits, correspondence, and publications. This non-profit educational institution was established in 1984 by E. Richard Hart, Matthew J. Cullen, and Barry Sadler for the purpose of providing historical background, documentation, and opportunities for discussion of current thinking in regards to environmental and cultural concerns, economic development, and problems connected with these issues in the North American West. The organizers were also involved with the Institute of the American West in Sun Valley, Idaho, and some materials from that organization are found in INAW files. Present are documents regarding the INAW's formative period, initial projects, and general business affairs, as well as financial records. Documents regarding the Zuni Land Claims court cases are included, as are materials resulting from projects regarding folklore, Idaho's Duck Valley, and other topics. Additional materials regarding work in conservation and sustainable development, particularly the Fence Lake project and efforts to formulate a Zuni resource development plan, include manuscript drafts and research materials. An inventory is available.
