Dr. Fayez A. Sayegh was internationally recognized as one of the great scholar statesmen of our time. His outstanding career as a distinguished educator and United Nations diplomat spanned more than three decades. From 1967 until his death in December, 1980, Dr. Sayegh served as Senior Consultant to the Kuwait Ministry of Foreign Affairs and as a member of the Delegation of Kuwait to the United Nations. He held previous diplomatic posts as Advisor to the Delegation of Lebanon, Counselor of the Yemen Delegation and Minister/Permanent Observer of the League of Arab States, at the United Nations. An outspoken proponent of human rights, Dr. Sayegh was one of eighteen experts elected (in their personal capacities) in 1969 to the newly-established United Nations Committee on the limination of Racial Discrimination. He was elected to three successive four-year terms as the Committees apporteur. Dr. Sayegh held a Ph.D. degree in philosophy from Georgetown University. He taught at Stanford and Yale Universities and the American University of Beirut, and was a fellow at St. Antony's College, Oxford University, England. He founded the Palestine Research Center in Beirut, Lebanon, in 1965, and was a member of the Palestine National Council. The recipient of many honors, Dr. Sayegh was decorated by the President of Lebanon with the Cedar's Medal, rank of Commander -- the highest civilian medal offered by the Lebanese Government. Dr. Sayegh was a renowned lecturer and a prolific writer. His books and monographs have appeared in translation in sixteen languages. Mrs. Sayegh was a life-long supporter of Dr. Sayegh's works. ARLENE BRIEM SAYEGH

A native of Ogden, Mrs. Arlene Briem Sayegh was raised and educated in Utah. She received her Associate of Arts Degree in Psychology and Spanish from Weber College, and her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology and Sociology from Brigham Young University. Prior to her marriage to Dr. Fayez A. Sayegh, she served for five years at United Nations Headquarters, and was subsequently employed for three years as Public Liaison Officer by the Arab States Delegations Office in New York City. Mrs. Sayegh's publications include poetry selections and encyclopedia articles. For many years, she also assisted Dr. Sayegh in the preparation of his oral and written works. With the concurrence of her daughter, Reema Sayegh-Lange, and with confidence in its preservation and optimum utilization, Mrs. Sayegh has donated this unique intellectual legacy to the University of Utah, to honor the memory of a meticulous scholar and eminent humanitarian, Dr. Fayez A. Sayegh.
