ALERTS / CURRENT AWARENESS
-Receive automatic email alerts on new articles on topics
you follow, or by authors or from institutions who interest you.
-Learn when your own articles have been cited by someone else.
-Have the newest table of contents of journals you read emailed
to you.
These indexes, with the exception of the journals'
own sites, are accessible to computers on the campus network / University of
Utah community. Check the
library's "article database" list for current URLs and access
information.
Almost all publishers and scholarly societies which issue journals online
offer to email the table of contents of new issues automatically. You can receive
the alerts even if we do not subscribe to the journal.. When we do subscribe,
these alerts usually link directly to the fulltext. Use a search engine to go
to the journal's home page. Then look, usually in a sidebar, for "alerts"
or" e- table of contents" . Example: Highwire
(distributes Science (AAAS), Oxford UniversityPress, many biomed journals)
Web of Science (Science
Citation Index, Social Sciences Citation Index, Arts & Humanities Citation
Index)
Despite the name, this actually covers 8500 major journals in the sciences,
social sciences and arts and humanities. You can set up alerts for articles
on a certain topic, by a certain person or from a given institution, or articles
which subsequently cite a specific article. This index is probably the best
single choice we have for alerts to scholarly articles, since it has broad subject
coverage and indexes articles very quickly. how

Digital
Dissertations (Dissertation Abstracts); Doctoral
and some masters theses. Downloadable fulltext for most dissertations since

SUBJECT SPECIFIC DATABASES
Some of the databases used for specific disciplines also have an alerting feature.
These databases tend to cover their discipline deeply, but may take longer to
index articles than Web of Science. Each publishe handles alerts a bit differently,
but the basic concept is that you do a search and then save it. You'll need
to register your email address. Look in the databases's help screens for "alerts"
or "current awareness" for more advice.
