Utah's Catalog was developed by a team at the University of Karlsruhe Library (Germany) under the direction of IT Director Uwe Dierolf. The model for this project was the Karlsruher Virtueller Katalog (KVK - http://www.ubka.uni-karlsruhe.de/hylib/en/kvk.html), an enormously successful broadcast search catalog in Germany. Dale Askey, formerly of the Marriott Library, contacted Mr. Dierolf in September 2001 with the initial idea to build such a catalog for Utah institutions. Uwe readily agreed to start development, as this represented their first opportunity to work with a North American client. Working primarily via e-mail, Dale and Uwe devised a concept for Utah's Catalog that the team in Karlsruhe turned into a production model. Upon Dale's departure in May 2002, Anna Neatrour took over project coordination for the Marriott Library. Dale Larsen of the Marriott Library created the visually appealing graphics for the final version. The Marriott Library Usability Group tested and refined the interface, and developed a search tips page. With Utah's Catalog, users can now quickly search for materials at other major research institutions in the state as well as find copies available from Amazon and Alibris. |
