The Uintah Pappoose/Vernal Express
Kate Jean Boan was founder and editor of the Uintah Pappoose,
the pioneer newspaper of eastern Utah. She purchased a printing
press from Sears and Roebuck, and began publishing the four-page
weekly paper in 1891. In 1892 she sold the newspaper to James Barker,
who changed the name to the Vernal Express.
Kate Jean Boan, a colorful pioneer woman, died August 19, 1911.
Her obituary, in the August 25 issue, stated that "she was
of the dynamic type, a woman not to be led but to lead, the kind
that could plant the flagstaff of the press in a frontier country
and dare to dip her pen in vitrol if she thought it need be."

County Library for letting us use The Vernal Express Newspaper Index
