Harriet R. Harwood

Harriett Richards Harwood was born in Salt Lake City in 1870. She was a painter and wife of James T. Harwood. She died in Oakland, California in 1922.

As part of the first group of women artists from Utah to study abroad, Harwood traveled to Paris to study at the Académie Julian in 1888. She painted florals, still lifes, and interiors.

Her oil painting Étude (1892) was the only oil by a woman exhibited at the World's Columbian Exhibition in 1893.  Lemonade Still Life (1888) is another example of her painting. Her work is included in the permanent collection of the Springville Art Museum.

Biography adapted from Artists of Utah.

Harriett “Hattie“ Richards Harwood (1870-1922) was the wife of J.T. Harwood and a Parisian-trained painter of what Alice Merrill Horne called “elusive flower“ pieces showing delicate effects. “Hattie“ Harwood died in 1922 in California, which contributed to her husband's decision to return to Salt Lake City and a new job with the University of Utah.
