The 17th annual Gould Lecture will feature Dr. Yoky Matsuoka, the Torode Family Endowed Career Development Professor in Computer Science & Engineering at the University of Washington.

Dr. Matsuoka’s talk will describe how a neural-inspired approach to physical human-robot interaction can re-enable limb movement for people with disabilities, and how, in the near future, robots will be used to rehabilitate and assist daily activities for people with disabilities. This change will substantially reduce both the medical cost and the burden on families.

In June 2010, the Washington State Historical Society, the University of Utah’s J. Willard Marriott Library and the University of Michigan Library all entered milestone records into WorldCat using the WorldCat Digital Collection Gateway. The 400,000th milestone record, a record titled, Golden-cheeked Warbler 1, was entered by the University of Utah’s J. Willard Marriott Library (www.worldcat.org/oclc/614416763 ). The record, Golden-cheeked Warbler 1, is a sound recording and part of the Western Soundscape Archive.

The Western CONTENTdm Users Group Meeting for 2010 is June 2-4 at Marriott Library. We’ve got a great lineup of presentations over a wide range of topics related to digital library innovations, production processes and digital preservation. Registration is open now for the June 2 preconference and the June 3-4 conference.

We’d like to take the credit for booking them, but by coincidence, U2 will be playing Rice Eccles Stadium (which is just a stone’s throw from Marriott Library) on June 3rd. Tickets are still available!

What better way is there to wrap up the conference day than by going to U2 that night?

We’re also tweeting! Follow us on Twitter for up to the minute conference news and information.

I found this helpful little guide while trolling around the Library of Congress’ digital preservation page. While I spend all my time at work dealing with issues surrounding the preservation of  the Library’s digital collections, like a lot of people, I don’t always do so well with my own files at home.

Here are a few tips from the Library of Congress that are aimed at helping you preserve and organize your personal digital materials such as important computer files, emails and digital photos.

Marriott Library is abuzz with final preparation activities for the October 26 rededication. Continuum Magazine featured the rededication in their fall issue. Whether or not you plan to attend rededication or visit the library in the near future (and we hope you will do both!), we wanted to get out the word about the event and services that will be impacted.

Mrs. Laura W. Bush, who taught school and served as a public school librarian in Texas during her professional career, will deliver the keynote address at the rededication of the J. Willard Marriott Library on Monday, October 26, beginning at 10:30 a.m.

The rededication ceremony will be held in the library atrium on level three and is free and open to the public, however, invited ticket holders will have priority seating. Overflow seating will be provided in library classrooms 1130 and 1150 on level one, where the program will be streamed live on video screens.

To accommodate set up for rededication events, some Marriott Library collections, services, and facilities will be temporarily unavailable to patrons. We apologize for this inconvenience. Affected areas include:

Closed October 19 – October 30:

Grand Reading Room, level three

Closed October 23 – October 26:

Atrium and study areas, level three

Closed October 26 All Day:

Middle East Library, level three

Special Collections, level four

Closed October 26 from 7 a.m. until Noon:

All public areas on levels three, four, and five

The visitor parking lot west of the library will be reserved all day on October 26 for ticketed rededication guests.
