There is no database solely for urban planning. Try the general databases below or think of which other academic departments would be interested in your topic and try the more specific indexes in the second section or in other research guides.

Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals
(1860) 1934 - present
Indexes over 300 journals in architecture, historic preservation, interior design, landscape architecture, and urban planning. Provides a citation. Marriott owns some of the material indexed. Printed copy in Fine Arts reference, Level 2, Z5945 .C649.
Web of Science
(1955) 1997 - present
Consolidated searching of Science Citation Index, Social Science Citation Index, and Arts & Humanities Citation Index, multidisciplinary databases listing articles in 8500 of the most important scholarly journals. This broad coverage makes it particularly useful for urban planning issues. A distinctive feature is ability to find articles which have cited a known article or given author in their bibliography. Very up to date. Search by topic, author, journal title, author's institution, cited author, cited work, date. Articles may be earlier if they were CITED from 1997 on Ebenezer Howard is in current indexes). Some direct links to fulltext. UU owns many of the journals indexed.
Use online Science Citation Index for 1980 -1997 . Printed indexes (1955- ) in Science Reference and General Reference.
Proquest
The best source for local information is often newspapers. Search Proquest for hundreds of US and international papers. A related database has almost every word and image (even ads) the New York Times has published since 1851. Lexis Nexis Academic also covers newspapers.
Academic Search Premier
ca. 1990 - present
Provides basic coverage in most academic fields. Covers 8000 journals and magazines; for 4500 of these the full text of the articles are included in the database. Use the "advanced search" screen to search for words in article's text.
Digital Dissertations
1880 - present
Describes most doctoral dissertations (and some masters theses) ever written at a US or Canadian university. The fulltext of dissertations written since 1997 can be downloaded.
Journal of Planning Literature
(1967) 2000- present
Review articles analyzing the recent literature on a specific topic. Not comprehensive and not searchable but, if your topic happens to be featured, you will get an authoritative overview. Paper copies HT166Z .J68

Compendex
(1896) 1970 - present
The most important index to the professional literature in all major engineering disciplines; good for transportation and environmental issues. Abstracts come from 2,600 engineering journals, conferences and reports, and from 1990s on includes citations from an additional 2,500 sources. UU owns some of the material indexed. Compendex is working with journal publishers to link from recent citations to the original articles, if we subscribe to them.
