FIND JOURNAL ARTICLES and FIND BOOKS

Database Selection Note: The best overall index for Mechanical Engineering literature is "Compendex". This index is found at the "Engineering Village 2", the names are frequently used interchangebly. "Mechanical Engineering Abstracts" is a very good second choice for many mechanical engineering topics. "Axiom" (also called "INSPEC) is the best source for computer, electronics and control literature. "NTIS" is the source for reports on government funded research (of which there is a great deal in many diverse areas). "Applied Science & Technology Abstracts" give access to many trade publications and to several top journals that have a distinctly "applied-engineering" focus. The "Science Citation Index" covers the top 25-30% of journals in Mechanical Engineering journals and also provides the ability to search the scholarly literature based on citation-sharing to locate topically related articles.

Remote Access to Library Databases: Nearly every database offered by the library come with license restrictions from the database producer. Normally, the library is allowed to offer database access to selected library computers only (restrictive license) OR to all computers across campus (usual license). If you are a student, faculty or employee of the Univesity of Utah, you may register for remote database access, allowing you the ability to search from home or other off-campus locations.

Main Library Databases:

Compendex / Engineering Village 2 - (1970 - Present) This resource is available to University of Utah users only.
The primary scholarly index for Mechanical Engineering, indexing over 5000 engineering journals and conferences. Search the scholarly Compendex index or search engineering web pages on the internet.
Topics Covered: chemical and process engineering (15%), computers and data processing (12%), applied physics (11%), and electronics and communication (12%) civil engineering (6%) and mechanical engineering (6%)
.

Engineered Materials Abstracts - (1986 - Present) This resource is available to University of Utah users only.
Indexes the world's literature on polymers, ceramics and composites: their properties, applications and manufacturing. Citations from over 1500 journals, conferences, technical reports and dissertations.

INSPEC - (1968 - Present)This resource is available to University of Utah users only. WARNING! - When the Database Opens You *Must* Select 'Inspec' as the Database to Search.
This is the primary index for Physics, Computer Science & Control Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering. This is an excellent resource for articles on computer and control technology for mechanical engineering applications.
Topics Covered: Computing and control, physics, electrical engineering and electronics, and information
Science.

MathSciNet - (1940 - Present) This resource is available to University of Utah users only.
The best index to the scholarly Mathematics literature. Provides access to over 60 years of "Mathematical Reviews" and "Current Mathematical Publications", two premier indexes.

Mechanical Engineering Abstracts - (1981- Present) This resource is available to University of Utah users only.
Coverage of 734 scholarly journals and trade publications are currently monitored for inclusion in this database. Not all publications monitored are fully indexed. This database is a very good second choice for Mechanical Engineering topics after Compendex (EI Village 2).

NTIS - (1964 - Present) This resource is available to University of Utah users only.
The National Technical Information Service covers information on U.S. government sponsored research and development projects, and reports, software, and data from 300 government agencies, ncluding NASA, DOD, DOE, EPA, DOT and the Department of Commerce. Each biweekly update is cumulative.

Science Citation Index - (1980 - Present) This resource is available to University of Utah users only.
SCI covers over 3,300 of the world's most significant scientific and technical journals across more than 160 engineering and scientific disciplines (the top 25-30% of journals in each discipline determined by citaion frequency), with over 700,000 new items indexed each year. Find articles by keyword/author searching or by following "citation-webs" to other important articles that don't necessarily share similar keywords.
Topics covered: *All* engineering, science & medical disciplines.

Free Online Databases . . . ( available to those without library 'remote-access' rights ) :

Collected Algorithms of the ACM - http://www.acm.org/calgo/
Software associated with papers published in the "Transactions on Mathematical Software", as well as other ACM journals are incorporated in CALGO. This software is refereed for originality, accuracy, robustness, completeness, portability, and lasting value. Readers may subscribe to CALGO. Subscribers receive quarterly notification of the appearance of new algorithms, as well as copies of research papers describing them in loose-leaf binder form. Back issues may also be ordered.

Edinburgh Engineering Virtvual Library - (EEVL) - http://www.eevl.ac.uk/eese/
The "Engineering E-journal Virtual Library" covers the full text of over one hundred engineering e-journals, which are listed in the EEVL catalogue of engineering resources. In order to be selected, e-journals must be free, full text (or offer most of their content as full text) and available without registration.

MatWeb - http://www.matweb.com/
MatWeb's database of material properties includes thermoplastic and thermoset polymers such as ABS, nylon, polycarbonate, polyester, and polyolefins; metals such as aluminum, cobalt, copper, lead, magnesium, nickel, steel, superalloys, titanium and zinc alloys; ceramics; plus a growing list of semiconductors, fibers, and other engineering materials.

NIST Web Search Engine -http://www.boulder.nist.gov/ - (National Institute of Standards and Technology)

Standards:
The Science & Engineering Library carries a full set of ASTM standards (updated every 3 years), IEEE standards, the ANSI Boiler and Pressure Vessel Codes, SAE - J series standards (in the "SAE Handbook"), most ACI standards (in the "ACI Manual of Concrete Practice"), and a smattering of ISO and other standards. Visit the Science & Engineering Library's Standards Page for more information and links to many standards issuing organizations.

Property Data: EngNetBase (CRC Handbooks Online) - This resource is available to University of Utah users only.
Search 80+ CRC Handbooks from primarily Engineering disciplines. In addition to vast amounts of property data, many of these handbooks have descriptive chapters that provide an overview of certain engineering and science topics.

Selected reference works located in the Science Reference Collection, Level 4.
Besides scholarly literature, much information useful to engineers is in books, handbooks, & encyclopedias. A few of these very useful resources are listed below. This is *not* a complete list. The large majority of property data published over the last century is *not* available on the Internet, but is found in printed handbooks, looseleaf collections, and journals. Locating data takes perseverance and not every material or compound has published values for all possible properties. Reference books are not usually allowed to leave the library. However, many reference books that are available for checkout, may be found in the main engineering collection. Consult a Science & Engineering librarian for assistance in locating property information. Nearly all of the selected reference works below have been published in the last 10-15 years.
An asterick (*) denotes a handbook searchable in the online database "EngNetBase".
